1. We Measure Distance in Minutes, Not Miles
Ask a Long Islander how far away something is, and you probably will not hear miles. You will hear, “about 20 minutes,” “an hour with traffic,” or “forget it if it is the Southern State at rush hour.”
2. Everyone Has a Favorite Bagel Shop
Bagels are serious business on Long Island. Everyone has their go-to spot, and yes, we can absolutely tell the difference between a real Long Island bagel and one from somewhere else.
3. Pizza Is Not Just Pizza
Long Islanders have strong opinions about pizza. Thin crust, Sicilian, grandma pie, corner slices, garlic knots, and whether or not your favorite place is still as good as it used to be are all fair topics of conversation.
4. “Going Out East” Means Something Different to Everyone
For some people, it means the North Fork. For others, it means the Hamptons, Montauk, wineries, farm stands, or a long summer drive. Either way, “out East” feels like a mini vacation.
5. The LIE Is a Personality Test
